A guiding hand for community based organisations through mentoring

Graduation

Graduation ... the first three organisations:
As the actual event drew nearer, there was a build up of excitement and anticipation among the community based organizations. The event was the first Barnabas Trust graduation, and the focus of attention? Three Community Based Organizations, Masivuke Aids Education in Keiskammahoek, Eastern Cape Gender Development in Duncan Village and Willowvale Aids Action group in Willowvale. The graduation celebration itself took place at a luncheon at the King David Hotel in East London.

The guests of honor were of course the people running these CBO’s, and they were joined by: Nzwaki Madonsela and Mbulelo Kutu from Provincial Department of Health, Helen Nee-May a councilor form Amatole Municipality, The Barnabas Trust board members, our mentors and Mr. Jack Nyanisile lecturer and researcher from Rhodes University, and our guest speaker for the day.

Looking at the people you could see satisfaction on their faces. In fact the whole event was marked by a joyous sense of achievement. The highlight for me was when Yvonne Gough presented the Gough award to Elsie from Keiskammahoek, the longest serving Home Base Care volunteer out of the three organizations.

Framed certificates were presented to each organization, so that they could proudly display them in their offices. Masivuke actually made a hugely enlarged copy and it is the first thing you see when entering their offices!

One of the volunteers commented “I feel so privileged and spoiled by having the graduation celebration at a hotel. I was never at a hotel before”
